We are staying in Sienna for 4 nights and would like to see some of the hill towns but will not have a car. I'm thinking of San Gimignano and Volterra one day, and Montepulciano, Montalcino and Pienza another day. Is it possible to do this by bus or will it be necessary to book an organized tour?

I traveled by bus in Tuscany last year. Based on my experience, your suggested multi-town day trips would be challenging to pull off. You might be able to do Volterra and San Gimingnano same day, but I think a car or tour would be required to combine the other 3 towns.

Frank makes a good point: this would be difficult to do by bus. Organized tour or car rental are better choices.
