Hiking/walking in Capri

I am trying to determine our hiking/walking time in Capri. I do have both the Sunflower and Cierone books. My question: we are staying in Anacapri. All the hikes seem to originate out of Capri. Having visited Anacapri for a few short hours sometime ago, I was intent on staying there rather than busy Capri. With the intention of hiking perhaps this an error. Must we always start with the Phoencian stairs or bus to begin our hikes?

We stayed in the area between Giardini Agosto and Punta Tragara, pedestrian pathways and did not deal with crowds.

Most of the tourists in Capri will be near the piazzetta so as you move further away it is not crowded. We stay on Via Tragara which is very quiet as well as gorgeous and convenient for starting some hikes.

There are plenty of walks in Anacapri, including up Monte Solaro to Cetrella, on via Migliera to the lighthouse viewpoint, statue of Mary, and Faraglioni viewpoint. Challenging but beautiful Path of the Forts. If you are expert walkers/hikers, you can also walk from the statue of Mary up the back of the mountain to the top of Monte Solaro. Ditto for the Passetiello. I have done all of these many times. The latter two are not recommended for those with vertigo. Enjoy!

Ellen, are you differentiating between paved and unpaved hiking? Capri has many destinations (example Villa Jovis) which are two miles, partly level, each way, with considerable sun exposure and zero retail. But it's paved.
