We will be hiking to Schlern Haus from Castelrotto in a month. Can anyone describe the trail conditions, are Hokas adequate and what was the hiking time. Thank you.
Assuming you'll take the Seiser Alm cable car from Suisi/Seis or a bus to Compatsch. From there you'll hike to the Panorama Lift to get you part way up the mountain. From the Panorama lift the trail hike is 2 hrs 50 min per the Schlernhaus website. If you hike from Compatsch its 3 hrs 20 min. The trail is good; it's not called the "Tourist Trail" for nothing. But any trail can get muddy if it showers. My experience is these times are optimistic; no time for resting or smelling the flowers.
If you take the Marinzen Lift from Castelrotto, it's probably 3+ hours hike to Compatsch from the top of the lift. This is just my estimate, as I couldn't find any direct info on this. Then continue as described above.
This may be too late for your trip, but Monday Sept. 15 is Rick Steve's zoom cast on the Dolomites with a Q & A at the end if you sign up: https://www.ricksteves.com/travel-tips/travel-classes/monday-night-travel
