Hi there,
I want to plan a trip to hike in the Dolomites for my 75th birthday taking my son and his girlfriend for his 40th.
I would like to hike between hotels or refugios with someone else moving our luggage.
I heard Rick today on KQED with Mina Kim say he is planning a similar trip this summer.
I would love to hear who Rick is working with to plan the trip and move his luggage and help with hotel accommodations.
Maybe folks in the community can help as well.
Thank you all for any tips, guidance, recommendations you can offer. Planning a trip of this particular nature is a first for me.

We used Holimites to book a Via Ferrata for my husband and I. They book hut to hut hiking as well. We stayed at the hotel Ustaria Posta which is owned by a family totally devoted to outdoor activities. I would highly recommend both. It isn’t fancy so if you are looking for fancy, possibly not for you, but comfortable with good food and great advice.
What a nice birthday present for your son. It sounds like what I have done several times with my own sons.
Holomites is a great suggestion!!! Locally owned and run by the Tavella family. Contact them and see what they can offer you.
We stayed 3 nights at Hotel Ustaria Posta on an independent trip in 2001. The hotel is not fancy, but comfortable and well-run. I corresponded with the son, Igor Tavella, before booking, as I knew he was an avid mountain biker the same age as my own son. He is one of the founders of Holomites and they were just getting started that year. sounds like they have grown considerably!
We were given a warm welcome upon arrival at Ustaria Posta, and it was apparent that at that time they did not get many Americans. At dinner we were served by Igor’s younger sister Susann, who was a little shy and uncomfortable with speaking English. So I spoke to her in German.
Each night after the main course we were offered dessert, and the first 2 nights my response was, “Nichts für mich, Danke” (nothing for me, thank you). On the third night, when the offered dessert was tiramisu, and I declined again, her response (translated from her German) was “I am sorry, but we are all out of “nichts”. Said with a perfectly straight face. So I had the tiramisu and it was delicious.
This was in early September 2001. One week later, on the morning of 9/11, within hours of the attack, I received an email from the Tavella family, expressing their sympathy and condolences to all Americans. I have never forgotten their kindness.
In the event the Holomites cannot offer what you seek, you might contact mountain guide Karin Pizzinini at
[email protected] Karin was one of the local guides when we did a guided hiking tour in the Dolomites in 2022. She is a very talented and professional guide, with lots of contacts, and may be able to connect you with a local company to set this up for you.
Thank you all for your replies. I am still working on my plans and may have more questions but you have gotten me started.
