We will be doing a lot of walking on the Amalfi Coast in April using the Sunflower guidebook that RS recommends. Will I be fine with my comfy athletic shoes or should I bring my hiking shoes (light-weight and water resistant, but not quite as comfortable).
In my experience hiking the CT and up the 1,000 stair climb from Atrani to Ravello, true hiking boots are not needed. I've done the CT and Amalfi coast in my athletic shoes, and in my Chaco sandals (with a back strap)
It's not like you are hiking the mountains in Switzerland.
Depending on the time of year, you might need hikers for warmth...other wise, go with what you have, and don't pack extra footwear if it's not as comfortable
Thanks for your helpful post. I guess at this point my remaining concern is wet weather. I know it can rain in April, but I don't have a sense of Italian coastal rain. If it does rain, is it likely to be pouring rain? Is it likely to rain for most or all of a day - or just for short periods during a day (in which case, we can probably avoid hiking during the worst of it). We get lots of rainy days in San Francisco where I live, but it rarely pours and so I don't get soaked if I do get caught in it. Would it be like that on the Amalfi Coast in April? Any info any of you out there can provide, will help me decide. I leave Monday morning, so a quick response will be appreciated! I'm trying to pack, but am having trouble deciding which pair to bring!
I think you should plan for some rain showers but it's unlikely you'll experience torrential downpours this time of the year. I wouldn't worry about taking hiking shoes as long as you've got comfortable shoes for stairs and dirt paths.
My wife hiked from the beach in Positano to Montepertuso in sandals.
Barbara: The closest weather forecast I could get to the Amalfi was for Naples, an 8-day forecast, it shows some rain some days but appears to be mostly in the evening, here's the forecast: Naples 8-day forecast made Mar 28
Barb, been watching the Sorrento webcam, and it rained today, been raining the last few days. Always check the weather forecast before you leave.
If it's really rainy, it's not a great idea to be on Italian trails. There are no safety rails, etc.
