hiking Sacra Monte de Varese

We are considering this hike while visiting Lake Como. I understand it is a 9.5 mile hike out and back and we do not have the time for that. My question is, if we hike the first three miles out will we encounter any of the chapels on the trail

No. The chapels are not on the way to Sacro Monte from Varese. The big attraction at Sacro Monte is a 'Holy Road' up the mountain with 14 chapels with religious scenes along it from the 17th century. You should visit as it's a historic landmark and the first of it's kind. We went to the 2nd most famous to the south, Sacro Monte di Crea, and enjoyed a beautiful walk along the forested mountain and experienced this different kind of art and cultural history.
This website has some good descriptions and you can take bus line C from Varese: https://www.arscurrendi.com/visiting-sacro-monte-di-varese/
