Ok, there’s got to be one naysayer and that’s me. This trail is harder than people make it sound. If you are an avid hiker, and are prepared with good hiking boots and water, this is good trail with great views. However, most tourists aren’t packing an extra set of hiking boots. A good portion of the trail is hard, rocky ground with a lot of slight changes in elevation (4-5 steps up and down). Even with an early start it is well traveled, you will not be alone. Getting to the trail head and (more importantly) back down isn’t exactly the most straightforward thing either. And, it can be HOT. I’m a middle aged man in pretty good shape and this trail wore me out.

And sure the views are spectacular, but I found the views to be spectacular at almost every moment on the Amalfi Coast. There’s just so much to do in this area, I have a hard time recommending using a day for this. All I thought about on the ferry ride back, staring up at the cliffs and massaging my feet, was all of the other things I could have done that day. If it didn’t have a sexy name, I don’t think this trail would be half as hyped. Just, fair warning.

We did it and enjoyed it very much. We are middle aged and did not find it to be that rigorous and we are from south Florida which has no hills. But we are in pretty good shape. You have to like hiking though because as the poster said you can get beautiful views from the ferry going up the coast with a whole lot less effort. And I did have hiking shoes with me as I had planned for it. My husband did the hike with no trouble in good walking shoes but I have some foot issues and wanted the extra support.

We did meet people along the way which actually was kinda fun. There were two groups--one young twenties group from the UK and one in their 60's and 70s from Denmark that we kept meeting up with.

You also have to plan ahead and think about how you are going to get to a starting and back from an ending point. We stayed in Amalfi because it was easier logistically.

Everyone is making such valid points; I have much to consider. I appreciate all points of view. Rita

I guess in the interest of full disclosure, I should add that hiking is one of my favorite things to do. So, not once did I consider "all of the other things I could have done that day." The only shoes I wear in Europe are a nice, comfortable, water-resistant, low-top pair of Merino hiking shoes (which is what I wear pretty much every day of my life!). I also happened to be staying in Nocelle, so the end of the trail was near my B&B (though I did have to ascend around 400 steps to get back to my B&B).

I, too, enjoy hiking. Can you share the time of year you went and the temperature? For this part of the trip I am with friends who do not particularly enjoy hiking so may be doing this bit of the adventure on my own. Rita

I was there in mid to late May. Temperatures were in the low to mid 70's on a bright, sunny day, so it was a great day for a hike.

Thanks for the information. I will be there in mid June so may depend on the heat. Rita

I’m 71. Did this hike May 2017.
Outstanding.
Requires bottle of water, hat, sunscreen, sturdy walking shoes. I wear Keen low ankle shoes whether I’m hiking or walking cobble-stone streets of Europe.
Your option is East to West OR West to East.
Take the 7 am (approx time) bus from Amalfi to Borremero. (Not sure I’ve spelled this correctly.)
Just a few euros. Buy a one way ticket at the Amalfi bus ticket depot.
Hike East to West. At the end of the hike, have a fabulous lunch in town.
It is NOT a difficult hike at all.
Do not hike mid-day. It will be too hot.
Differing guide books state it’s a 3-5 hour hike.
I did it in less than 3 hours.
If you hike West to East, there’s not much to do at the Eastern terminus.
At the end of your West direction hike, after a great lunch, take the bus down the mountain. Yes, you can walk down the steps to Positano - they will destroy your knees! Don’t !
Have a great time. The views are spectacular.
Picnic tables located several areas along the hike. Bring snacks, stop and enjoy the views.

We also took a bus from Amalfi to Borremero (sp?). It was filled with hikers. The funny thing was all the people taking pictures of the route in town with their phones. We took the upper route when there was a choice of which way to go.

We did hike mid day (bus about 1 pm) but lucked out that it was a cool day in July. So it all depends on the weather. It was only in the 70s after some scorching (90 + temperatures).

We also did it in less than three hours. We brought lunch from a stand in Amalfi and took it with us. It was fun to stop and eat and look at the view.

On the bus-- there is a small store on the left at the end of the hike where you can buy bus tickets down to Positano. We bought some ice cream and then sat and waited for the bus. The alternative is the 1000 steps down.

We then walked from the bus station down to water front where we bought tickets on the ferry to go back to Amalfi.
