Hiking near Bolzano

Buon giorno,

We'll be staying in Bolzano in September for 2 nights and want to get some feedback as to the best hiking trails close to Bolzano. We will not have our own transportation so will be relying on public transport to get us to the trails. We normally do "medium" difficulty trails but just want a great day out so would be willing to do easy trails or easy to medium. Obviously we're looking for trails that are very scenic and where we might find a nice outdoor restaurant overlooking the mountains and valleys. Any suggestions? We don't mind taking trams up to a certain point and hiking from there. Thanks in advance!

Some useful websites. There is a gondola from just north of the Train/Bus station in town that goes up to a fine plateau with hiking trails overlooking the town and the Dolomites Alps across the valley. And, Castelrotto is a short bus ride away with connections to Seis and Alpe di Suise.

Also Gillian Price has a number of hiking guides to the Dolomites.

you can take the bus from Bolzano up to Ortisei which has 2 lifts and a funicular so you have a choice of hikes, including the Alpe di Suise
