Hiking Monterossa del Mare to Vernazza

Hello fellow travelers! Looking for insight for hiking Monterossa del Mare to Vernazza. In RS guidebook, he only states V to MDM, and we are thinking of doing it the other way, since we are staying in MDM. Has anybody done the hike this direction? Any reason it should matter? Are the views more spectacular going one way over another? Thanks for anything you can offer.

We have done it both directions. The MDM to Vernazza views were spectacular.

Thank you! I realize RS may only be mentioning one way, figuring you could go either, but I wanted to double check. :)

We've done Monterosso al Mare> Vernazza direction as well. Lots of steps on the ascent from Monterosso but there are steep steps out of Vernazza as well so a horse apiece. Like Suki, we thought the views were great. Go for it (with sturdy shoes, and not in the rain!)

The most spectacular views are coming from Monterosso into Vernazza. Note that it is Monterosso al Mare not Monterossa del Mare -- useful if googling it for hotels or whatever

I've hiked that trail several times and always prefer to start at Monterosso al Mare, There's a steep uphill climb at the start and some of the steps have a high "rise". It's much easier on my "old knees" to climb up those steps rather than down. There used to be small booths at the end of each trail where hikers could buy the park permit. I don't know if the booths are still there this year?

We have old knees and hips also, but prefer Vernazza to Monterossa. That climb in Monterossa is really steep. We have lunch in Monterossa, then train back to Vernazza.

The best part of vernazza to Monterosa is the beach chairs and drinks awaiting you. Turn around a couple of times leaving vernazza for the photos.
