My friend and I are needing to travel from Venice airport to Cortina for our hiking trip in the Dolomites. Then we would like to go from Cortina to the Cinque Terra. What is the easiest way to get to Cortina from Venice and then from Cortina down to the Cinque Terra? From Venice to the Cinque Terra by bus is not bad, but It appears that it will take 9-10 hours with 3-4 train changes to get to the Cinque Terre from Cortina. I'm thinking that renting a car from Venice might be easier and cheaper, even if I have to let it sit for a week while we hike. Any ideas or thoughts on this?
Best way to travel from Cortina to Cinque Terra.
Here is tool that may help you plan your travels.
Not sure I would leave a rental car parked for a week while I was off hiking the hinterlands ( or be sure to get the zero deductible LDW and make sure it covers vandalism as well as theft)
Rent the car in Bolzano and drive from there. I would hire a private driver-taxi from Cortina to Bolzano as the bus option does take hours. But as Joe says, it is awfully expensive to let a car sit unused for days while you are hiking.
DRIVE
Go to Venice first than Dolomites than Cinque Terre
Rent the car leaving Venice.
Drive to Cortina. The Dolomites struck me as probably the least likely place in Italy to be concerned about a car vandalism/break in type issue and most all lodging there has parking ; though it is often not free it is not as expensive as overnight parking in Venice or Cinque Terre.
Then after Cortina drive to Cinque Terre. If you don't need the car after that drop the car off in La Spieza just outside of the Cinque Terre and make the short rest of trip via train from La Spieza.
