Hiking in the Cinque Terre...

Out of curiosity, what time do they close the main trail? I've been before and hiked it many-a-times, but I was just wondering how late the trails are open... until dusk? Does anyone enforce this?

I was just thinking of staying in Manarola next time I go, then if I was to eat dinner or something in Riomaggiore, could I just walk back on the Via dell' Amore trail in between the two towns at night since it's paved and easy? I think I remember a gate being on the Riomaggiore side of the trail.. I just don't know if they close it... (Yes, of course I could take the train, but I'd prefer the stroll..)

If they close it, when does it re-open? Dawn?

Anyway, just weighing my options, and curiosity got the better of me..

Thanks for any help..!

Stuart,

I haven't been on the trails at night, but since there's a gate (at least at one end) I'm assuming it's closed at some point.

"Does anyone enforce this?"

YES! The small wooden booths at the end of each trail always seem to be "manned", although it's unlikely they're staffed on a 24-hour basis. I suspect that the via dell' Amore might be a popular stroll with locals in the early evening also, so they may leave it open until 22:00 or so (but that's just speculation)?

When you arrive in Manarola, ask at the Hotel as I'm sure they would be able to provide current information.

Cheers!

do you know if the hiking trails have been reopened? I read somewhere that they had mad slides and some of the trails are closed.
