I’m interested in the Rick Steves Alps Your Way tour. There is one full day in the Dolomites, I’m wondering if it’s possible to hike the trail around Tre Cime from the hotel we stay in?
Where is your hotel?
The Tre Cime trail is not that easy and takes 4-6 hours to complete the loop.
You will need hiking boots, unless you are a very experienced hiker with steel ankles.
You are probably staying in Castelrotto or Bolzano, neither is very close to the Tre Cime which is at least q hours by car from Castelrotto. You will be able to hike in the magnificent Alpe di Siusi from what I read of the tour notes.
The hike is realistically possible only if staying in Dobbiaco or Cortina. You need some transportation to access the Auronzo Hütte (refuge) that is the base camp. If going by car, the toll road is 40 euros and you must reserve in advance the parking at AuronzoH, or you will not be allowed. There is a shuttle bus from Dobbiaco (line 444), timetable at: https://www.suedtirolmobil.info/fileadmin/pdf/2025/444_20250531.pdf
I remember doing only half the trail several times in the Eighties, without ever completing the circuit, the first half is not difficult (but boots always required on high trails). It was already hot and crowded, and we are talking about more than 40 years ago.
