Hiking in Cinque Terre from Cornelia

I'm going to spend two days in the Cinque Terre and have a room booked in Corniglia for two nights. I was hoping to hike the main trail between the towns, the Sentiero Blue, at least from Corniglia to Vernazza and from Cornelia to Manarola. I checked the Cinque Terre Cinque Terre National Park website and it shows that the direct hiking trails between Vernazza-Corniglia-Manarola are Closed. I know that they had been for some time but wondering if anyone knows if they are scheduled to reopen by the summer season -- I'll be there in August.

Closed.

My guess is that SVA2 Vernazza > Corniglia will be open, although a bad storm or other complication could close it again. Same for Monterosso> Vernazza. The part of the SVA2/Sentiero Azzurro/Blue Path" from Corniglia to Manarola will be probably be closed for sure as it's been closed for years now due to landslide. The thing about the Sentiero Azzurro route is that it's fragile, the most traveled, and any sort of rockfall, storm or other deterioration can close any open segment at any time. The GOOD news is that, for stout hikers, there are workarounds, albeit longer and more strenuous.

Anyway, the short answer to your question is not to count on ANY trail in the CT being open, depending on the conditions at the time you're there.

Understand that you will need to purchase a park pass for any segment of the Sentiero Azzurro which is open:

Thanks for the info Kathy! Rick Steves and his staff are always on their A game! I’ll keep my fingers crossed that the Corniglia-Vernazza part of the Sentiero Azzurro will be open in August.

We have avoided the sentiero azzuro since our first visit in 2010. The higher trails are much better. Take a look at this site about other trails and inquire locally, but the hike between Manarola and Corniglia by way of Volastra is spectacular. Check locally, of course, for conditions. There is even a bus to take you to Volastra from Manarola to eliminate the steep climb at the start.

Alsavia, FYI - Kathy is not part of RS staff, nor are the majority of the posters on this board. Just members of the traveling public, much like yourself. There are some posters that are part of the staff, which you can identify with their user info.

A few points to add to the great replies from Kathy and others.....

If you want to hike the popular Sentiero Azzurro trails, the Corniglia > Vernazza > Monterosso segments will most likely be open, while the Corniglia > Manarola > Riomaggiore segments will be closed (probably until 2021 at last word). However as others have mentioned, there's an extensive network of trails in that area so you can bypass the closed sections. Those trails run higher in the hillsides, so they're a more robust hike.

If you just want to try a few of the trails, you might consider taking the train to Monterosso (it's only a short trip) and then hiking back to Corniglia. The start of the trail in Monterosso is the most strenuous part as it involves a steep uphill climb, so it's better to do that while you're well rested. Be sure to take lots of water. One benefit of that method is that when you're finished the hike, you'll be back at your accommodations in Cornigla and can have a rest.

If you want to have a look at Manarola and Riomaggiore, you could use the local trains. As I recall, the Cinque Terre Treno card includes fares for the small shuttle bus that goes from the rail station in Corniglia up to the town. If you don't use the shuttle, you'll have to hike up many stairs.
