Hiking in cinque terre

Would you recommend hiking sticks to use in the trails? Thanks!

If you normally don't use hiking sticks, then I would not buy them for this trip. The path between villages varies a lot, from flat and strollable, to clambering up and down, with/without rocks. Some sections have a rail, many do not. But if you are normally steady on your feet, and pay attention, you will be fine. Keep your hands free to keep your balance. Take your time.

Please check in regards to the trail you plan to take. We did the one between Corniglia and Vernazza and it was not a “stroll.” We were 66 and in shape from hiking our Cascade trails. This trail was steep and rocky and not a pleasant experience for the other couple with us that weren’t hikers. As for hiking poles, only if that’s how you normally hike and I wouldn’t pack them to Italy for one or two day hikes.

It depends on what trails you undertake & the weather. We were there in September / October 2012, right after an Australian tourist was killed by a rockfall on the Walk of Love and the trail was closed. So we took the high trail and got caught by heavy rain as we made our way down which made the trail extremely slippery so poles were a life saver. As a senior hiker, I take and use them on most trails and will take them this October for Umbria. They also help me deal with my hip problems.
Generally not required nor used.

Thank you for the info. I had a double knee replacement 8 months ago and we’re going this late September 2022 . I am doing ok with walking and plan to do the recommended Rick Steve
‘S trails of Monterosso to Vernazza and Corniglia to Vernazza and maybe the hike from Madonna Di Reggio to Vernazza. Hopefully we will have good weather

Bad knees? Use poles. While this is not a really difficult walk, there are some steep places, and it's the coming down that will be the hardest on your body. I use TWO poles, not just one to help me with balance and keep pressure off my knees and hips when I hike.

YES for hiking poles! It will save your knees and help when the trail is slippery.
Get a good pair of poles. Light, fold up to put in your suitcase.
REI or another good outdoor store will help you find poles that fit your body and hiking style.
