Does Rick's latest Italy publication thoroughly cover hiking in the Dolomite's? We are in our late 50's but very active and have a high level of fitness. Planning a trip soon and will case this forum for specifics when it gets closer. Just wondering about a book to read in the meantime. Any other recommendations? Thanks.
I no longer have that section of my guide book, but I believe I remember coverage of Ortisei as well as Castelrotto. Probably also Bolzano down in the valley. Most likely some other towns, too. There's definitely information on how to get up into the mountains via public transportation. But the book doesn't pretend to cover the entire Dolomite area.
One thing I found very helpful was the brochure available from local tourist offices that includes all the local train, bus and mountain-lift schedules. It made it very easy to plan each day's activities.
I think at least some lodgings in the area provide a free pass that covers trains and buses in the Val Gardena. There are other valleys in the Dolomites; the only one I've been to is the Val Gardena.
