Hiking boots necessary in Dolomites?

I'm travelling light and will be in the Dolomites for a few days in the last week of June. Can I walk/hike the easy-moderate trails with tennis shoes or do I need hiking boots? Thank you!

I did it in low-cut hiking boots but could have easily done same in quality off-trail shoes.

I've done it without even owning hiking boots. Unless you want to climb the Marmolada, I'm sure you can find hiking paths that you can do with tennis shoes.

Nina, There are a variety of types of hiking paths in the Dolomites, and many that I've seen around Castelrotto and Alpi di Suisi could easily be hiked with low-top or "street" shoes. I normally only take one pair of shoes on trips (ECCO Trac II Low), and use them for not only walking around cities but also light hiking. If you're planning on doing more "heavy duty" hiking, then footwear appropriate for the conditions would be warranted. Happy travels!

Yes! The trails are very worn and smooth in most places and you shouldn't have trouble. I've done several of the longer trails (around the Drei Zinnen for example) in tennies and not had a problem if just for a few hours. We did do multi-day hut-to-hut hiking in the Dolomites one year and I was glad I had boots for that trip. Some of the trails accessing the higher mountain huts are quite rough but if you are staying on the more well-worn trails lower down such as the Seiser Alm you should be fine. Have fun! Such a beautiful part of the alps... :)
