We'll be in and around Bologna, Padua and Verona from late Sept.-very early Oct. We'd love to do a good, somewhat rigorous and, of course, scenic hike there. A day trip would avoid losing precious time exploring those places (no overnight to Corniglio, Monte Malpasso or Lagdei unless someone says it's a must). We've found a couple of options on AllTrails, but I thought I'd ask others for tips.
Bismantova is a phenomenal rock formation in the Park of the Apuan Alps. The mount is mentioned by Dante and it's a memorable experience. It's about 1 hour from the autostrada exit at Reggio Emilia and Sept./Oct. is perfect.

Thank you so much for suggesting this, it looks fascinating!

"Sassi di Roccamalatina" are scenic and not far from Bologna. In the area can be done even some nice food tasting.
Less scenic but interesting from the point of view of the nature is "Parco dei Gessi".
"Via degli Dei" is a route from Bologna to Florence and could be a nice option, but the full one takes some days. Another is the "Via Vandelli", mostly near the border between Tuscany and Emilia.
All around Monte Cimone could be very nice. I suggest to include even Giardino Esperia.
It's not the same but Bologna does have a traditional long urban/park Portico walk that might scratch that itch a little bit for you.

Thank you, Tod! Actually, I think this one is one of the few we found on AllTrails, and it looks like a good one. I'll double check that later. I was especially delighted that part of it goes through a portico, imagine using something that is so historic.
I'd like this to go to Ricky: thank you for many good, interesting options. It'll be a busy morning reading up on those.
