I will be in Bologna the last week of September for a week. Can anyone suggest some hikes that I can access from near Piazza Maggiore. Where it may be accessible via train or taxi.

Bologna is a pretty large urban area, but it seems that are some hilly green areas south of the city that might accessible by bus that might lend themselves to hiking.
The best urban Bologna experience you might be interested in is the The Portico di San Luca in Bologna walk that starts on the edge of town and runs up the hill 3.8K one way.

Vignola is on the river. There are paths along the river you can walk and you can continue on to Spilamberto and Marano. Via degli Dei connects Bologna to Florence but it of course is a multi-day hike.
