We are considering the hike from Portofino to San Fruttuoso Abbey during our upcoming trip to this area. As anyone completed this hike recently? How are the trails? Are the trails fairly well marked?
I have not been able to find any details on my hiking app.
Thanks
Hello,
We are doing the same hike next week and will try to follow this blogger’s post. https://travelcollecting.com/hike-portofino-san-fruttuoso/#The_Portofino_San_Fruttuoso_Trail
Sounds like a fun way to spend the day.
The website www.portofinotrek.com is done by locals and includes maps and trail info and is updated regularly. They answer questions on Facebook and by email.
Mike, thank you so very much. This is exactly the Information I was looking for about hikes!

The path between San Fruttuoso and Portofino was one of my favorites--and I did almost all of the paths. The coastal views are nice. I found overall the hikes were well marked. We even did the one between Camogli and San Fruttuoso--with chains, exciting!
Hi there!
This past May, we took the ferry from Camogli (where we were based) to San Frutosso and then did the hike from San Frutosso to Portofino. It was my favorite hike of the entire trip (including those in the Cinque Terre). Leaving Portofino is very foresty, and then you are along cliffs...and seeing Portofino from afar as you approach it is incredible. We went on to continue to walk from Portofino to SML and had dinner there.
I really liked doing the hike in this direction for a variety of reasons. 1) There are more ways to get from Portofino back to wherever you are based versus relying on ferries from San Frutosso (on the day we went the water was choppy and they stopped ferries earlier than planned). If based in Portofino, you would be returning to home-base. 2) I am terrible with exposure. I can climb up anything, but hate heading downwards along steep cliffsides, etc. I found this direction to be much easier and did not mind a climb up out of San Frutosso, and the descent into Portofino is very gentle. The last section is a well-established path along the road. The path along the cliffside is very wide and flat, and I felt pretty comfortable with my husband by my side. If you are the opposite, then the direction you are suggesting makes sense. My husband is much more of a hiker than me, and found the trail to be a cake walk.
If you are a big hiker you could also consider doing Camogli-San Frutosso- Portofino. There are 2 ways to get to San Frutosso from Camogli. One with water views and the chains to hold on to in one section, and the other does not have the water views but no chains. Feel free to PM me.
