Hi, I am trying to book Trenitalia high speed train for travels from Sorrento to Florence and Florence to Venice. Travel dates are 27th July and after. Not able to find high speed trains. Is that all the tickets are sold out or the schedule is not out yet. Appreciate any help here. If the trains are sold out, what are other cheaper travel options for 4 passengers.
those trains don't go to/from Sorrento. There is train service from Sorrento to Naples. There you connect to the Freccia (Trenitalia's high speed trains) to Florence and Venice.
Trains do not sell out months in advance, in fact there are seats on all Naples-Florence high speed trains departing within 30 minutes.
You can't find trains between July 26 and July 30 because during those days RFI is rebuilding a bridge over the tracks in Florence.
If you read more carefully the warning on trenitalia.com it says : "temporarily not available", not sold out. Trenitalia is organizing alternative routes in Florence to bypass the works area. Buses were involved in January, when the works started: https://www.theflorentine.net/2026/01/07/work-begins-replace-ponte-al-pino-overpass/
I'm afraid there is no Trenitalia station in Sorrento and no high speed tracks in/out of Sorrento. You must take an EAV-Circumvesuviana local train from Sorrento to Napoli Piazza Garibaldi station, go upstairs and take either a Trenitalia or an Italotreno high speed train from Napoli Centrale to Florence.
Thank you for the quick response. Taking the high speed from Naples to Florence makes perfect sense. However, I can’t add any trains on this route to the cart for 27th July as it still says travel solution is temporarily not available. Would you suggest I wait for a few more days
Small commuter train from Naples to Sorrento. Enjoy Sorrento to Naples by taking the ferry. Then hi speed rail to Florence.
I wait for a few more days?
What else? But check again in May or after June 14.
As I wrote above you can only wait and see how the alternative route will be organized during the works. Locals will start checking the July train schedules in... July, do not expect Trenitalia to worry about anxious tourists and hurry up.
See marco’s post above
The trains/alternative will be available for purchase once the solution thru the construction area is worked out
July is 4 months away-no need to purchase tix this early anyway
You cannot purchase Circumvesuviana tix online- just get at station day of
They can’t sell out
Thanks much. Have another question. Planning for another leg of the journey from Rome to Sorrento visiting Pompei and Vesuvius enroute. Appreciate any thoughts on this and recommendations for mode of travel.
Fast train to Naples then local Circumvesuviana to Pompeii
Same line that goes to/from Sorrento to Naples
Trying to do both Pompeii and Vesuvius is going to be a squeeze, I would not attempt that in July
Pompeii has luggage storage, not sure about Vesuvius
Here is the Circumvesuvian schedule
https://www.positano.com/en/naples-to-sorrento-train-schedule?timetable_route=sorrento_napoli
same procedure in reverse really.
Rome to Naples high speed Italo or Freccia, Circumvesuviana to Sorrento and drop bags then back to Pompeii, or try to leave bags at entrance to Pompeii and collect bags and go Sorrento for check in.
Although it is slower I would do the first. In any case it is a long hot day Rome to Naples to Pompeii, 3 to 6 hours at Pompeii, on to collapse at Sorrento.
I'm afraid that I completely left out Vesuvius - I don't think you can do it comfortably.
I’m not sure if that unavailability has anything to do with the Ponte al Pino overpass or it’s simply because it is too early to buy tickets for after June, when the summer timetable kicks in. I checked the availability of those very same trains from Napoli Centrale to Roma Termini only, which is long before the Florence overpass under construction and therefore unaffected by that work, and it is still not available for purchase. Regional trains and Intercity trains (both subsidized by regional governments) are available however, all the way to past the overpass.
Just check at a later date. Seats don’t sell out, ever, not even one hour prior to departure.
