High Speed Train From Rome to Venice

Our flight arrives in Rome on April 11th just before noon and we want to take the high speed train direct from the Rome airport to Venice S. Lucia railway station . I am finding it confusing which train to take and where to book the tickets. As always your help is appreciated.

Where to look up train times and buy tickets: The Italian Railways website: http://www.trenitalia.com/tcom-en
The station at the airport is called "Fiumicino Aeroporto", the one in Venice is "Venezia S. Lucia".

But, you will not get a direct train from Fiumicino Aeroporto to Venezia S. Lucia, you will need to get one train from Fiumicino Aeroporto to Roma Termini or Roma Tiburtina (the website will tell you which), and a High Speed train from there to Venezia S. Lucia.

And, if you are arriving on an intercontinental flight, you cannot predict when you will exit the airport. You flight could be late, or immigration could be fast or slow.
The usual advice is NOT to buy tickets in advance when arriving by palne, just buy when you get to the airport station, and accept you will pay a higher price. The full price is €8 for the train to Roma, and €86 for the train from Rome to Venice.

I use Loco2.com- it was recommended on here by another RS forum member ) it is very easy to navigate, and will show you all trains including fast (Freccia) and Regional (local trains that make many stops) along with prices and times. You can create a free account and book thru them. They do not mark up or charge fees ( I compared to Trenitalia and Trenord which are the 2 train companies in Italy). You do need to know station names but there is a drop down box. Hope this helps. I will put links below to the train websites as well. If your unsure of station names just google . But I really found Loco2 to be great and have used and bought many tickets thru them. Depending on the type you either get a paper ticket or code you can show on the train. Dont forget to validate paper tickets before you get on the train or you will get a fine. There are machines at every station to validate (stamp).

Please note it is MUCH cheaper to buy your tickets in advance for “Fast” trains, but you need to commit to a definite date and time. for Regional you can buy them day of. The name of the main station in Rome is Roma Ternini.

I found 2 direct trains from the airport to Santa Lucia: 11:08 and 15:08. There may be more but either leave too early or arrive too late. There would be more connections if you are willing to change trains in Tiburtino or Termini. Try Trenitalia website to buy the tickets. If you buy ahead they can be cheaper but - if your plane is delayed you loose them and have to buy new tickets for full price. So it's little bit risky to go in advance.

There are only two a day that originate from the Airport station and therefore require no changes, and the only one you can make is at 3:08pm, which gets you to Venice at 7:35pm.
All others require you to change at either Roma Termini or Roma Tiburtina, the two main stations in Rome. If you land at noon, you can probably make the 3:08pm with plenty of time to spare (assuming the plane lands on time). But if you are in a hurry to get to Venice, you might be able to make the earlier train if you are willing to change and get there one hour earlier. There are approximately one train per hour to Venice departing from the Rome main station (Termini).

I would wait for the 15:08 direct. No changes and the best you can do by taking an earlier one with change is the one that gets you to Venice at 6:35 pm, just one ophour earlier than the direct one.

I want you to know that the Rome to Venice trains are very popular in high tourist season (the same trains stop in Florence as well). So, although trains rarely fill completely, however the cheaper Standard or 2nd class sometimes does, in which case you might have to buy a more expensive seat on the higher classes (business or first).

diana,

As Chris mentioned, it's not a good idea to buy advance train tickets when connecting from an international flight. The tickets for the fast trains are specific to train, date and departure time so if your flight is late or whatever and you board any other train than the one listed on your ticket, you'll be subject to hefty fines which will be collected on the spot!

Although it will be more expensive to buy tickets on the day of travel, it's a better method under the circumstances. There are both Kiosks and ticket booths at the rail station at FCO. Depending on what time you actually get to the airport train station, you may be able to connect with one of the direct trains. Otherwise you'll have to take a Regional train from FCO to either Termini or Tiburtina stations. You can check the Trenitalia website to see what your options will be. One important point to note when using Regionale trains (or Metro, Buses, etc.) is that you must validate (time & date stamp) tickets prior to boarding on the day of travel. Failure to do so may result again in hefty fines collected on the spot!

If you with to buy advance tickets for other trains you'll be taking, I find the easiest website is www.trainline.eu, which sells tickets at the same price as the rail networks. Registration on the site including payment information is required first, but once that's done it's very user friendly. They sell tickets for both Trenitalia and Italo as well as many other rail networks in several countries, so this provides "one stop shopping".

If you decide to pre-purchase tickets for the 15:08 direct Freccia train to Venice and your flight arrives on time (or soon after), I suggest you walk over to the arrivals level at Terminal 1 (less than a 10-minute walk) and eat lunch there. Imo, the dining options at Terminal 1 are better than at either Terminal 3 arrivals area or the train station area. Unforunaltely, the best dining options at FCO are after security at Terminal 1, so they'll be inaccessable to you.
