I believe Ferragamo currently has 3 locations in Rome.
You are going to have to be careful and need to have a good eye. A local Florence resident (a relative) told us that there is little Italian leather anymore. Most of it is imported from Argentina. That was a couple of years ago and was in reference to the leather market in Florence. Have no idea of how to evaluate her comments.
I was told by a shopkeeper when I was living in Rome that if Italy had to house the number of cows required to produce all the "italian leather" that is sold, there would be no room for any people on the Italian peninsula! That said, you can probably find some good quality pieces assembled in Italy. There is a shop in Piazza Navona, at the end with the Neptune fountain, that has a nice selection of purses, wallets, and other small items and has been around for a long time. Sorry but I can't recall the name.
Not far from Piazza Navona is Del Guidice Roma.
