Hidden Gems - Rome

Hey all, we are unexpectedly getting 2 extra days in Rome on top of the 3 we already had, YEAH! I have so many ideas, but as we've all been before and we were trying to focus on less visited sites or things we haven't been to see yet I thought I'd ask if there are any places a lot of people don't really know about and that may interest us - history buffs here. Churches, museums, architecture, experiences... all suggestions welcome. We already have a day out of Rome to Naples for a visit to Herculaneum and the Archeological Museum there. Other day out of Rome suggestions are welcome - Orvieto, Tivoli, ??

Also, we will be in Rome on June 29th, which if my research is correct, is the Festival of Sts. Peter and Paul. Anything I should know about that day? Any recommendations on where to watch the fireworks I'm told are shot off?

Thanks all!

Since you are history buffs, consider a day trip to Ostia Antica. Easy to get there using public transportation, not very crowded as a rule, and should only take three quarters of the day. Google it and see if it holds any interest.

Hi JLK,
How about Ninfa gardens?
We also just rented across from S. Giovanni Laterano Basilica and visited the various components of its complex day by day.
Btw, if you'd like to read an amusing true tale about our experience at Herculaneum 5 weeks ago, see my post 'He Came out Through the Bathroom Window' over on the Fodors forum (where I go by 'zebec').
I am done. the end.

Thank-you for the suggestions, I will start researching them and will definitely check out the Herculaneum post!

Santo Stefano Rotondo (not far from the Colosseum) is worth a visit.

I used to live near Sant’ Agnese fuori le mura and dropped by often. Read Margaret Visser’s book The Geometry of Love before you visit. It’s all about the church.
