Hertz rental car pick up in Florence

We will be taking the train from Milan to Florence to pick up a car for 6 nights in Tuscany. We don’t like driving in big cities so I thought we would head out to the airport from the train station. There is a tram or we could taxi there. Is it worth it to do that or should we just rent from Hertz close to the train station? It’s been over 10 years since our last Italy trip and I remember that train station and surroundings to be very crowded. Any thoughts?

I wouldn't want to be driving in Florence center if it could be avoided. Four years ago we rented car from Hertz at the Florence Sud location which is right by highway heading south into Tuscany. We took taxi from Florence center. You may want to see if that's helpful. Enjoy.

We picked up our car from Hertz at the office/garage on Borgo Ognissanti which is actually a fairly easy walk from the station. To leave the city from the garage you turn right out of the garage (it’s the ONLY direction you can go), take the third exit at the very near roundabout (loosely called)- approximately 1/2 block after you’ve left the garage-and in about two minutes you are out of the city and headed onto the Auto Strada to get you West, South, etc. The staff will give you directions and believe me, it’s easy to do. No bus lane to worry about and since you are headed out of the city, no ZTL there. Just pesky ZTL’s in almost every other town/city you will encounter.

You’ll pay more for a pick up at the airport plus the tram or taxi fare
And it’s in the wrong direction from Tuscany countryside

Where exactly are you headed and where did you plan to drop car?

I would just pick up at the train station location
There are many posts here with directions to head out of town easily-look for posts by Roberto

All drivers must have an IDP

We picked a rental car on Borgo ZOgnosanti too. It is very easy to leave Florence from that location.

Thanks for the info! I changed the pickup location and took everyone's advice since it does seem like an easy exit out of the city. Surprisingly it is about $28. more, but we'll save that on the taxi. And it should be a short walk to Hertz from the train station.

Hertz is now located on Via Alamanni. Click below

Follow the directions below to the Ponte alla Vittoria (Victory Bridge). No worry about the ZTL if you follow the directions. Just make sure that once you are on Via Della Scala, a one way street, you stay in the left lane as the right lane is a bus lane only and there is a camera that enforces it.

Force you cross the bridge you will be headed to the A1 freeway. Follow the directions on green signs pointing to AUTOSTRADE (freeways) and the to Roma (Rome). I’m assuming you are going south of Florence for your Tuscany stay.

Roberto…you’re always so helpful…on the same topic, but with a twist…do you have any advice if one is picking up at that same Hertz location but taking SR222 rather than the autostrada? Thank you!

If you pick up at the same Hertz location, next to the SMN station, you have two choices. The beginning portion through Via della Scala is the same, but once at the intersection with Viale Rosselli you have two choices.
One, as explained above, is to go to the Ponte Alla Vittoria, and eventually to the A1 freeway entrance called FIRENZE SCANDICCI. Once you pick up the ticket at the toll booth, you follow the directions to ROMA (I.e. A1 southbound) and exit 3 exits later at FIRENZE SUD (Florence South). As soon as you pay toll at the toll booth you immediately turn right to the direction of Siena SR222, which starts right there (you will see the Radisson Blu hotel, formerly Sheraton, on your right).
The second option is to turn right on Viale Fratelli Rosselli at the corner of Via della Scala, and follow the boulevards that go around the historical center and eventually end up at the same Radisson Blu Hotel where the SR22 starts.
The second option through the city boulevards is much shorter in length (13km vs 23 km, or 8 miles vs 14 miles), but since the traffic in Florence streets literally sucks (and that is an understatement), especially now while they are building the new light rail line on Viale Lavagnini, the much longer route through the A1 freeway is (in most cases) actually faster and certainly less confusing. I know the A1 route requires you to pay toll between FIRENZE SCANDICCI and FIRENZE SUD, but it costs only €1.20, therefore less than a cappuccino.
It’s up to you. Using Google Maps, Waze, or any navigator, enter from Hertz on Via Alamanni to the Radisson Blu Hotel on Viale Agnelli. Either route you choose, to start at the SR222, eventually you will have to drive in front of the Radisson Blu near the FIRENZE SUD freeway exit where the SR222 starts.

Also consider that Hertz has an office on Via Ambrosoli, near the Ponte Varlungo. That office is called HERTZ FIRENZE SUD. You would need a taxi to get there from the city center, but if you pick up your car there, going from there to the SR222 (Radisson Blu hotel) is a breeze. If it works in terms of rental prices etc. consider that too.

Roberto, thank you!
Per your suggestion years ago, we’ve used the Hertz location on Via del Sansovino…so easy..but now closed. I’ll check into the Firenze SUD location even though we have a car reserved near the train station. Thanks so much for your detailed directions!
