Any opinions/advice on stopping to visit Hercules? Thanks
Could you mean Herculaneum, near Pompeii?
yes, Herculaneum. Thanks!
Herculaneum is a very easy day trip to make from Rome. You would do it just like you would if visiting Pompeii. You take the train into Naples. There you would take the commuter train, circumvesuviana, heading towards Sorrento. After about 15 minutes you'll come to the Ercolano stop. This is where you get off. Just go down the street, down hill to get to the entrance of the site. It's about a 10-15 minute walk. It's a great site. The buildings are in wonderful conditions and you really can get a feel for what the city was like. It's a very small site and can be seen in about 3 hours. If you have time you can combine it with a trip to the National museum where all the artifacts from Pompeii and Herculaneum are housed. Donna
Thanks, Donna!
Just an added comment the Circumvesuviana train is located down stairs in the Naples train station AND don't forget before you board ANY train to please be sure to stamp your ticket at one of the yellow stamping machines located on the binario (platform).
There are two stations at Ercolano (Herculaneum). The one you want is "Ercolano Scavi" ie the first one when travelling from Naples. Here is its newish website http://www.pompeiviva.it/pv/en/ercolano.htm Edit - if you get the chance go inside the Suburban Baths. It may be a problem because the opening up of the building is very erratic, it suffers from water innundation. The first time we got in a few years ago was by accident and the last time was in May 2008. We could not get in in October 2009 (edit May 2010). http://www.pompeiviva.it/pv/en/termesuburbane_ercolano.htm
