Is there a one day guided tour of Herculean and the museum?
We're planning on taking the train from Florence once our 9 day tour is over (stay two days) and make our way back to Rome to fly back to US.
Joat1, do you mean Herculaneum? Do you plan to stay near the Amalfi Coast/Napoli area for two days? It's an easy trip from Napoli or Sorrento, when I was last there you could hire guides onsite. Someone else may be able to recommend a guided tour.
I agree with Zoe, just hire a guide onsite. You don't say how long you'll be in the area but an overnight would be best if coming from Florence.
Donna
If you mean Herculaneum, fyi the Italian name is Ercolano. That confuses some people who don't know that they should get off at the Ercolano Scavi stop on the Circumvesuviana train.
And which museum are you referring to? The main museum for the Vesuvius ruins (Herculaneum, Pompeii) is the Archaeological Museum in Naples.
Good luck.
Admission to Herculaneum includes a map and booklet that are useful and Rick also found their audio guide informative and interesting (10 euros for 2 adults to use). These tools allow you more freedom at your own pace, which also works well since the site is less crowded than Pompeii.
I've heard that the audio tour offered at the site was put together by the university professors and graduate students who worked on the site so its supposed to be very informative and the proceeds go to fund further archaeological work and preservation of the site.
The BBC has a great documentary on Herculaneum that is available on YouTube called "Life and Death in Herculaneum". Its hosted by Professor Wallace-Hadrill. I highly recommend it.
I used the audio guide when I was there 3 years ago. It was very good.
