Herculaneum-heads up

Today we started for Herculaneum on a train from Sorrento. Everything I read said 2 stops for Ercolano, get off at second saying “ Sacvi”. There is only one stop as we learned today! Second , learned since Covid Herculaneum is closed on Wednesday. It does say on websites now, but not when I wrote itinerary

There are 23 stations on the line between Sorrento and Naples, including Ercolano Scavi (note spelling), not 23 stops.

The other station in Herculaneum, called Ercolano Miglio d'Oro, is not a stop on the Sorrento-Naples line and not a single train departing from Sorrento and headed to Naples calls there.

Maybe "everything you read" said you could get a glimpse of the Ercolano Miglio d'Oro station while on a train from Sorrento. A warning to let you know when it's time to get ready and get off the train.

Dario,
My effort was to help. I do not understand your response. Train schedule on the train showed two stops, I’m sure I am in error but I am a somewhat seasoned traveler who researches a lot before I leave, in fact, I had just purchased a small pocketbook for local suggestions and it said Ercolano- Scavi,. Just do not know where I went wrong.

If I was to venture a guess, it was that you may have read some outdated info, Ellen? Yes, Ercolano Scavi was the station you wanted. The 2nd stop you may have read about, which was probably Ercolano Miglio d'Oro, is not currently a stop on the Circ. Naples-Sorrento line, according to the schedule Dario linked.

But that may not have always been the case, such as what was posted on this (outdated) blog...
https://gardenofeaden.blogspot.com/2013/05/how-to-get-to-herculaneum-from-sorrento.html

...or this old thread on Fodor's; see post by "Uncle Gus":

Pretty sure the stop he was warning against was Ercolano Miglio d'Oro.

This site also states that, "There are two train stations called Ercolano, you want Ercolano Scavi.".

Not sure when that 2nd station/stop was removed from the schedule but it could have been a year to several years ago. Just a hunch?

Would someone please post a detailed description of how to get to Herculaneum from the cruise port? This is what I have:

You can take the train to Herculaneum Scavi. First, go to the Colombo Porto tram ($1-4), take it to the Napoli Porta Nolana train station. Hop on the train to Herculaneum but be sure to get off at Scavi.

Thanks so much!

Sorry, but I don't understand what you don't understand, no train schedule - including the one I linked - shows 2 stops in Herculaneum on the Sorrento-Naples line. It shows two stations in Herculaneum, but I guess a seasoned traveller knows the difference between a stop and a station.

You can take the train to Herculaneum Scavi. First, go to the Colombo Porto tram ($1-4), take it to the Napoli Porta Nolana train station. Hop on the train to Herculaneum but be sure to get off at Scavi.

It's right, I'd avoid sites using $ instead of €, but this one is right.

To avoid the dilapidated porta Nolana area¹, you could walk to the Municipio metro station and take an underground train to Napoli Piazza Garibaldi.

All trains going to Herculaneum stop at Piazza Garibaldi underground station.

As you can see on Gmaps, the Colombo tram stop and the metro station are quite close.

So what is the difference between a 'station' and a 'stop'?

It's the difference between facilities and service. A station is the building, the physical site where a train can stop.

Can, not must.

In fact, if you looked at the schedules I linked you'd see that the trains running that line pass through the Miglio d'Oro station without stopping. The lack of departure and arrival times there means right that.
