Helpful apps?

Hi. What would be some helpful apps to have which would help us during our three weeks in Italy? We have WhatsApp for calls home. Someone said there’s an app for the closest hospitals? Maybe some for transportation? Best translator? Here’s where we’ll be, if that helps:

Venice, Cinque Terre, Turin, Asti, Aosta, Lake Maggiore.

Thank you!

Anchor Pointer GPS is a great app, not only for Italy, but anywhere. We used it extensively in Venice where it is easy to get turned around to mark the location of our flat and little shops we might want to return to. Use it in the US to find our car in a parking lot.

Eat Italy App for Venice is a great (paid app) for local eats.

Google Translate is the translation app we used.

Have a great trip.

One comment to make regarding Google Translate.....

Don't count on GT to provide completely accurate and grammatically correct translations. I've checked it with native speakers of French, German and Italian and they've told me that the results are close enough to get the meaning across but not always perfect. I had an opportunity to test it extensively for an entire week in Italy, and at times it was a bit of a challenge. It seems to be improving all the time so can only get better. Note that you'll need a data connection to use GT, unless you download the offline version for Italian.

Some of the other Apps I find useful during travel.....

  • Google Maps
  • XE Currency Conversion
  • Trainline
  • Metro / Transit Apps for various cities
  • Rick Steves walking tours, etc.

Have a wonderful trip!

In addition to the apps listed so far, to help plan our trip I have been using:
*Maps.me and Google Maps
*Microsoft Translate can be used offline
*Rome2Rio
*Trenitalia
*Rick Steves Audio Europe
*Bookings.com and TripAdvisor
*Units Plus for currency rates & distance/weight conversions
*Google Voice to call our home landline
and I have bookmarked lots of websites putting them in folders by city or description.

Thanks Nigel for the CheBateo recommendation. It will be very helpful for our days on Venice.
