Help with walking plan for Victor Emanuel Monument

I find lots of information for history of the monument and specific parts of it online, but I'm having a hard time putting together a walking plan to actually visit it all. The monument is huge so I want to avoid back tracking or a dead end.

I was going to start at the base in the front and walk up through the staircases as far as you can go to see all the sculptures on the front side, Tomb of the unknown soldier and the statue of Emmanuel and keep going up. It looks like from some pictures some of the way might be roped off. So how far can you go? Can you walk all the way up to the panoramic terrace at the very top?

The two big doorways on the fronts of the wings, are they still access points for getting inside or are those closed?

I think the Museum of the Risorgimento is inside the monument but I think I saw the entrance is on the back side of the building now?

I see there is an elevator to the panoramic terrace, is that on the back side of the building only?

What would be a good plan on how to see it all?

When I was there in late November I walked up the front as you describe. Sections were roped off so there was mostly only one route to take up and around to the back. I didn’t go inside so can’t comment on that part. The elevator to the terrace is at the back, there is a charge. There is also a cafe on the terrace at the back. I followed a route back down that was again roped off so not many choices.

Hi Claire,
Thanks for you help
Did the route up take you around to the left and back to where the cafe is and then would you have been able to then go to where the elevators, or would you have to walk all the way back down the front face and then walk all the way back around to the back to get to the elevators?

Also were you able to go into the big portico at the top, the one with all the columns with the panoramic terrace you reach from the elevator directly above it?

Hi Mike,

I think I went up the right side as far as they let you and then went left to go around to the back. I didn’t see the entrance to the cafe but their seating was visible when I was also close to the elevator so both are in close proximity at the back. The highest level with the columns didn’t seem accessible except maybe via the elevator? There is a charge for the elevator. As you know it is a huge building and my spouse was waiting at the bottom for me so I didn’t linger for a long time. I hope that helps a bit.

Great help thanks.

I'm left wondering how you go inside the portico or if you can't?
