My wife and I are visiting Italy for the first time in mid March 2017. We are spending a little over 2 weeks, and have everything down except for the 3 days we have set aside for Tuscany. We would like to stay in a location so that we can drive and day trip to places like Volterra, Siena, Civita, and San Gimignano. Or any other spots that one would recommend. So if you could help with a good location and if by chance a outstanding BnB or higher end agriturismo with nice and comfortable quarters. We are in our 40's and will be without the kids. Any ideas would be appreciated. Once we are done with our 3 days for anything goes Tuscany we are staying 3 nights in Florence followed by 4 nights in Rome to end the trip. We plan to drop our rental car off in Florence and then take the train to Rome. Thank you.
Borgo Argenina outside of Castellina - Elena cooks with her guests one evening and it is a delightful time visiting and eating with everyone. Her homemade breakfast treats are delightful.
Cretaiole outside of Montepulciano - Isabella also cooks with her guests and her reviews continue to be at the top of the lists.
Ok thank you, we will look into this.
I highly recommend Fonte Bertusi outside of Pienza. Charming, unpretentious and set in lovely fields.
I highly recommend Locanda Rosati just outside of Orvieto. Great room, food and hospitality. Perfect location to explore Tuscany and Umbria. One day I would head east to Assisi and Gubbio, taking the "birdcage" lift up the mountain. When you are done, drop the car in Orvieto and train to Rome.
Another vote for Borgo Argenina. The location is great for touring Tuscany and the view from the terrace of vineyards and Chianti in the distance is hard to beat. We stayed there almost 16 years ago so I would be reluctant to recommend any place after that many years except that I see it's rated a "5" by Tripadvisor. Elena did a spectacular job of converting what she said was a village into a BnB. A significant part of the public area was a stable.
We used BA for touring Tuscany. San Gimignano has to be our favorite town of those that we visited. San G is very popular with tourists so you might want to make it the first stop of your day. If time permits you could add Monteriggioni to your list. It is more or less on the road to San G. Monteriggioni actually looks like all walled towns should look!
Thank you all for the recommendations.
