I am planning a trip for June to Italy with my family. Would like to stay in Naples for two nights then travel to Lucca and rent a villa.
What is the best way to travel between Naples and Lucca? Can I do this by train or is it best to rent a car?
Where are you flying into and out of? How long will you be there? Is this your first trip to Europe/Italy? Are you aware that Naples and Lucca are 550km apart?
It will take you most of the day to check out of Naples, travel a minimum of 4 1/2 hours, get to Lucca and then get transportation to a villa if it is in the countryside.
I roughly divide Italy into everything north of Rome and everything south of Rome. I try to visit one or the other on a trip, but not both.
Thank you for your response. I would like to fly into Naples only for a couple of days as that is where my father is from and I would like to see where he hails from. I do know that it is almost a full day from Naples to the countryside, but once in Lucca we will have time to do some touring as well as resting.
It is our first trip to europe/italy and not counting days of travel we will be there 12 days so a day of travel isn't too bad. I have not yet finalized the villa stay, but know I would like to be in that area. I am open to suggestions of course.

I understand. I made sure our Scotland trip started with Glasgow, where my great-grandfather lived before emigrating. We also visited the clan's ancestral home and Knap Chapel which contains the medieval MacMillan Cross.
You have plenty of time to make the trip. I suggest you carefully compare the price of a car vs taking the train. If you plan to have a car in Tuscany, it may work out to rent. If you plan to have a car, you might want to look at taking the train to Rome or better yet Orvieto and renting the car there. Hopefully others can give you an idea about driving south of Rome in June.
You are going to love Tuscany! We had planned to go to Lucca from our home base in Greve, but just ran out of time.
Thank you for your input, it is well appreciated. I hope that others may respond with places they really like to visit while in Naples or Tuscany as well.
