Help with Trains...Sorrento to Siena in October, 2011

Fellow travelers...I realize that similar questions have been asked previously but I have been poring over some of those posts and have yet to find a definitive answer. That may be due to some of the variables included by the requesting posters...my request is pretty straightforward. My daughter and I will be traveling from Sorrento to Siena on October 13, and I'd like some guidance on the most direct, efficient way to accomplish this. I do not wish to fly or hire a private driver/limo. Public transport all the way, whether it be bus or train or both. Based on some of what I've read it appears that we may have to connect in Florence, but connections in Rome and Naples have also been thrown out as well, and it also appears that some portions of the journey may have to be by bus? Could someone please clarify, and give me some detailed guidance on getting from Sorrento to Siena, including lengths of the different legs of the journey and whether those legs are best accomplished by bus or train? Thanks kindly in advance!

i'd go to naples and find a train to florence, then from florence take a bus to siena. i recall the bus station in rome is not close to train station, and i don't know about the details on bus directly from sorrento to rome. the best part about taking bus in florence is the bus station is very close to the train station, and bus to sienra means you don't have to climb the hill that much with luggage. the commute train from sorrento to naples is pretty good, esp. during the day there is nothing scary like you may have heard. i also like trian because it's a little more comfy than bus, and given italy's train is very cheap you can get a first class with a lot of rooms and drinks onboard.

From Sorrento take the circumvesuvio train to Napoli which can get crowded(go further down the track where the locals are standing to get a coach with seats instead of the standing only cars near the station). The ride takes about an hour, get off at the Garabaldi station then go upstairs to connect to trenitalia trains to Rome (~2 hrs) & then Siena. natively, you can also take the bus to Rome (http://www.marozzivt.it/web.aspx) which also leaves from the train station at 6am or 5pm. The bus does not have bathrooms on board and is about a 4 hour ride so plan accordingly. You have to buy tickets online or from the driver with an added fee. (Online may be better as there are only 52? seats on each bus). The bus takes you to Rome's Tiburtina station where you may have to jump on the metro 3 stops to get to the Termini station. From Rome you can get to Siena through Florence(Firenze), Grosetto, or Chiusi. I'd recommend the later two with ~3 hour ride.
