We would like to take the train from Venice to Milan. Is it necessary to buy train tickets ahead of time or can you buy them the day of departure. Also, how do you know which train station to leave from and go to. We had tried booking online with Trenitalia but we were unable to do so. Thanks for any help.
Yes it is best to book those ahead of time but the schedules don't go out further than 90-120 days.
And when using Trenitalia you need to use the Italian spelling of the city (e.g. Venezia Milano).
You can also book that same route with the other company that operates high speed trains Italotren https://www.italotreno.it/en
There is not much difference between the two.
Thank you for that information. I didn't realize we had to use the Italian spelling. We will be leaving Venice to Milan on April29 so we should be able to get tickets. Will try again.
Also, I assume you’ll be staying in Venice proper, so you need to put in the Venezia Santa Lucia station, not Venezia Mestre. Presumably, you’ll want to go to the Milano Centrale station, so you need to put that in also. And, you need to put in the earliest time you might want to be traveling.
Gayle, if you dont know which train station to select, then use the tutte le statione option in the drop down. The website will show which station the trains leave and arrive at when it spits out that days trains. If you are staying in Venice proper, then the station is Santa Lucia. If on the mainland, it's Mestre. Milan should be Milano Centrale
Thank you for your help and suggestions. Was able to get tickets on ItaliaRail.
