help with train timetables from rome to pompeii

Hello, 5 adults traveling from rome to pompeii March 20,2023. these are the train times that would work for my family: (the times are from Roma to Naples then Naples to Pompeii Scavi).

7am --> 8:12 then 8:49 --> 9:23 travel time 2h23m; this is on Campania Express and I like that I can buy advanced tickets to guarantee a seat
7:40 --> 8:54 then 9:09 --> 9:47 travel time 2h7m; I like this one because it leaves Rome a little bit later and has shorter overall travel time. unless the 9:09 is full and I have to wait for the 9:33 train.
8am -->9:13 then 9:33 -->9:47 travel time 2h11m

I have a couple questions about the Circumvesuviana that I can't find searching RS forum.
1) will Express be open by March 20th? online I have found mid-march and another says first of April
2)how likely will the 9:09 train be full and I have to wait for the 9:33 train? is there busier times on Circumvesuviana? I also read that I must purchase tickets 20 minutes prior, is this true?

Thank you for clarifying and giving me your opinion!

Nobody but tourists take the Campania express, chances of it being full are close to zero. I'd be more worried about walking downstairs in 15 minutes if this is your first time at Napoli Centrale

You can purchase the Circumvesuviana tickets whenever you like. You have probably read "up to 20 minutes prior" and the advice referred to the Campania Express. The Circum tickets are not train-specific, so 20 minutes prior what? The Circum tickets bought via app have a "shelf life" of only 2 hours, but it's always better than 20 minutes!

Did you compare Trenitalia's and Italotreno's schedules & fares between Rome and Naples?

Just focus on your tickets from Rome to Naples, then walk up and buy the soonest Circumvesuvia ticket, regardless of whether it is the express or not.

To be honest, your second option that only allows 15 minutes to get from your Rome train to the Circumvesuvia is probably not enough, especially with a group of people and not knowing where exactly you are going. The station for the Circumvesuvia is attached to the main station, but still a bit of a walk.

I did compare the 2 different train companies. the 7am and 8am are on Trenitalia and the 7:40 is Italo.

thank you for your advice!
