Help with train schedule

With the assistance of a number of posters here, I've put together what I believe is a workable itinerary which will get me from Volterra to Cinque Terre. I ask those with knowledge and/or experience to help verify this: Mon, 05 23, 11 Volterra > Pontedera Bus CPT 500 Bus 6:30 7:48 Pontedera > Pisa TRN Autres 3107 Train 8:14 8:28 Pisa > La Spezia TRN Autres 9762 Train 9:00 9:51
La Spezia > Monterosso TRN 24504 Train 10:07 10:31 My concern is the transfer time in La Spezia. Thanks

It looks like you'll be on a regional train so if you miss that one just wait for the next one. The two regional trains are about an hour apart so don't validate your ticket until you are about to get on but with more than 15 minutes between trains I think you'll be fine. Donna

Thanks for the advice, Donna. I just needed reassurance.

Our train from Pisa to La Spezia was very late, but the train departing for the cinque Terre villages waited. I don't know if that is typical, but it was a great relief to us.

I discovered that some trains from La Spezia to Monterosso run right on by the other CT towns, but this one makes all the stops. Isn't it strange that you have to go to the German or Austrian rail websites to find this stuff out.

While trenitalia's website has some quirks, finding out info on the trains is not one of them. on the screen that gives you the journey choices at the top. click the radio button at the far right. then click details by selection. You'll get a segment that says selected journey details. Once again click the radio button for the segment you want info on and all the details will come. Incidently, if you get to La Spezia on time, there is a train #2296 that leaves La Spezia Centrale at 10:01 that is an express. It stops only at Riomaggiore and Monterosso. It get you there at 10:17

Actually, Vernazza is my stop. I will check Trenitalia's website more carefully.

"Isn't it strange that you have to go to the German or Austrian rail websites to find this stuff out." I cross-checked everything on Trenitalia with the Swiss rail site, www.rail.ch. The Swiss site shows all the intermediate stops, which is useful if you are not riding to the end of the line. The Swiss site also shows different connections in some cases. For example, I noticed several times where Trenitalia would show a 5 or 10 minute connection, and SBB would skip to the next train, allowing 25 minutes or more between trains. Apparently they don't trust Italian trains to run on time. And from Verona to Florence, the Swiss site showed some morning connections that Trenitalia did not. It turns out that the morning departures connected to the ES Frecciarosso train at Padua. The Trenitalia site had us connecting at Bologna instead. Because we were on the expensive ES train for a shorter time, the Trenitalia route was cheaper by 20 euro per ticket, or 80 euro for the 4 of us. Needless to say, we chose that route, getting to Florence a little later in th eafternoon, but saving 80 euros. My point is it is a good idea to check 2 websites, Trenitalia and one other.

The trenitalia site will also show all the intermediate stops if you click for more information. If you feel more comfortable checking multiple websites you should do that but it is not really necessary. Donna

True. Somehow it seems much easier to check (fewer steps) on the Swiss site. Also, it doesn't seem to be as particular about correct spelling for the station.

Actualy, since we seem to be on a trenitalia tutorial... On the first screen after you have sent the start, end, date and time to the website. You seen the screen that gives you trip choices. If at the far left bottom of the screen there is a button that says "all solutions" or "tutte le soluzioni", it means there are more choices of train trips for the time span displayed. Just click the button and all the choices will show up.
