I have just searched the Trenitalia website for trains leaving Varenna on the 17th of September, and there does not appear to be any trains until 4:30 in the p.m. Am I missing something? I know that we will need to change trains at Milano Centrale but even when I search from Varenna to Milan, there are no Morning trains. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
They probably have not been loaded into the schedule yet---that more than three months from now, and the train from Varenna-Esino to Milan is a regional one ( meaning there is no advantage to buying well in advance).
There will be morning trains, rest assured. You can check that by looking at this coming Sunday, or the one after. Generally they run every two hours. We have always caught the one departing around 10:30 am.
Thanks so much.
Lola now you can see schedules up to the 11th of December and purchase tickets up to 120 days in advance.
Helen if you don't pick up an hour of departure, trenitalia.com defaults to the time of your pc. I've just made a fake search selecting 7 AM from the drop down menu: there are 4 direct trains to Milano Centrale between 7:00 and 13:00.
Bear in mind that from Milan to Bologna you can travel either with trenitalia.com or with italotreno.it/en.
Of course if the train purchased on trenitalia.com is late, do not expect italotreno to protect you.
Trenitalia shows some trains from Milano to Bologna as sold out: either there is a fair on the 17th or Trenitalia is going to add more cars and they have blocked bookings flagging the train as sold out. I bet on the latter option, it seems strange just some trains to be sold out so early, even in first class!
OK, I looked and it is showing the 10:37 departure from Varenna but not the earlier one (8:37).
I am seeing Super Economy fares on all trains, with none sold out.
Try again and be sure you set the time to 8 am or so.
Thanks did not about the time thing. Will check again.
