Will be coming in to Port on a Wed headed to Siena, train website says cannot book until 7 days from arrival, is this correct? And there are several different passenger classes on the train? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!
The train you are looking at is a Regionale. It is all 2nd class, no reserved seats. You just buy a ticket at the station, validate it before boarding, find a seat, and get off at your destination. They don't even sell tickets until a week before. Looks like you will switch to a bus from Grosetto to Buonconvento, then back to a train to Siena.
A couple of clarifications. As stated the 7 day limit applies to Regional trains only BUT never buy a Regional ticket on line as it comes with restrictions. Regionale trains are open seating - no reservations possible, no seat, you stand. Without checking schedule I assume you could get to Siena from Civitavecchia without going through Rome but I think it could be faster to go through Rome. There are about three trains an hour between Civit... and Rome. Basically a commuter run for an hour plus or minus 15 minutes depending on the train. Try to buy your ticket from Civit... to Rome at another other train station in Italy other than Civit. It can be a zoo at the Civit train station when the cruise ship unloads and especially if more than one ship in port. A Regionale train ticket is an open ticket that has to be used within 60 days and is NOT valid until you time stamp it in a yellow or blue box at the station but itncan be used on any Regionale train going in the right direction.
Thank you all so very much for your prompt replies and advice, we appreciate it!!
