We are planning a trip to Sicily next June. We are wanting it to be laid back and take it easy. We are starting our trip in Venice with a 12 day Pilgrimage ending in Rome. On our way to Sicily we are stopping in Salerno for 5 nights to visit the Amalfi Coast area to include Pompeii and possibly Naples. We are taking the train to Aci Castello near Catania for 5 night stay. After that we are heading to Palermo for 5 nights. We are considering renting a car in Catania area on the third day to take a few day trips and to use as our transportation to Palermo. We would drop off the car when we arrive in Palermo. I would like suggestions on what area to stay in between these two places. There are so many options. I am thinking we could leave in the morning and have part of the day to check out an area and then head to a hotel and then stop at another location on the way to Palermo. I really appreciate your input.
You're missing Siracusa and the Baroque villages in the southeast, which most of us really like. I'd want several days there. However, it's true that 10 days is not long enough to see the entire island, so you must be brutal in designing your itinerary.
You can detour to the Villa Romana del Casale on the way to Palermo.
You don't mention any of the Greek sites (Agrigento, Segesta, Selinunte). No argument from me--I happily skipped them all, but nearly everyone else seems to want to go to at least one.
