My husband, 5 year old son and I will be going to Italy the last two weeks of September. We are looking at staying in Salerno for 4 to 5 days and visiting all the Amalfi Coast towns including Capri. First question is, is Salerno safe. I've heard of alot of mafia violence in Naples. How is Salerno safety in comparison to Naples or Sorrento. Second question, what hotel, bed and breakfast, is a safe, clean and pleasant place to stay at in Salerno. Third question, if you can please describe Salerno. Fourth question, compare Salerno and Sorrento (because we also considering Sorrento). Fifth question, is Salerno easy to navigate without a car or is a car a necessity? Thanks!
We found Salerno smaller and more friendly than naples. It was largely destroyed in WWII so has more modern architecture. Has a public bus station. A long KM from ferry dock to train station. We did not find a source of bustickets near the ferry dock. Cleaner than Naples.
No advise on Salerno, but I can tell you that Sorrento is a great jumping off point for the Amalfi Coast. It is a bit more crowded since RS recommends it, but it has a nice grocery store, shopping district. Easy to get to the dock to catch ferries for the coast, and the bus stops right in the main square.
For fun, check out this webcam...www.sorrentoinfo.com (find the link to the cam) it's live and you can watch locals and tourists walking around. When you are there, see if you can find the Tabbacci and smile to your friends!
