Help with my itinerary (Rome/Florence/Russia)

This is my current itinerary (just my husband and I) 4 nights in Rome (switching hotels after day 2) 3 nights in Florence 1 night in Rome (flying out from Rome the next day, unable to change) Off to Russia for a week (tickets purchased, unable to change)
Back to Rome for 2 nights and then home (to make it a round trip we have to fly back before heading home, can't change this either) My question is this - should we shorten our stay in Florence and stay in a town between Florence & Rome for one night? We will be traveling by train between Florence & Rome I feel like this might be too much packing/unpacking and moving around - on the other hand, I wouldn't mind seeing something else if I can. We were thinking Assisi - Thanks for your thoughts.

In order to minimize backtracking and burning travel/sightseeing time , I would suggest this approach. On arrival at the airport in Rome, instead of staying in Rome, immediately train to Florence. Spend your nights in Florence, then return to Rome for the 5 nights. Fly to Russia. then return to rome for 2 nights. If you want to add a spot, then this order: 2 nights Florence 2 nights somewhere else (Assisi or Orvieto or Siena perhaps) 4 nights Rome Russia rome then Home

Hi Ron - Thanks so much for the advice - I guess I should have mentioned this...
We are limited by our dates based on some special hotel rates we have - the only flexibility we have is during the time between Florence & Rome...the rest has to stay the same. Although I have to say - your plan sounds much better, but I have to work with what I've got...

If you are suck with the way it is then NO don't make any changes and add a location. changing spots means that you will burn at least half a day possibly more with just the mechanics of packing, checking out, getting to transport, traveling and then doing the reverse.
