Help with last week in northern Italy

I have had quite a time planning this 90 day trip, but I am finally getting things booked and inquiries made. I plan on being in Vicenza June 8-25, and fly out of Milan on July 3. I will be at the airport Sheraton the night of July 2. I am trying to find a nice town or village to stay between June 25 and July 2. Any suggestions?

Jeanne, I have no idea where else you'll be during your 90 days, but I will throw out these initial suggestions for your final week: Varenna, Lucca, Assisi or Spello, Ravenna, or maybe some town on Lake Garda. There you go!

jeanne,

It would help to have more information on your overall route and places you'll be visiting, but one possibility that comes to mind is Stresa on Lago Maggiore. It's a beautiful city and there are some interesting touring possibilities there, including a day trip to Locarno (CH) on the scenic Cento Valli Railway with a return in the evening by boat.

It's also very easy to get from Stresa to Malpensa / MXP. Depending on what time your flight departs, you could also stay there on your final night, perhaps on one of the elegant hotels along the lake front.

Thanks to both Ken and Larry for the suggestions. I forget to mention my previously made plans. I will be spending time in Venice, Vicenza, Cinque Terre flying out of Milan. I made a little backward booking from Cinque for five days to Venice to Venice for 3 days then Vicenza for about 17 days. The last week is in question before flying out of Milan at 10:40 a.m. July 2.

Jeanne,

You may consider visiting Verona (en route to Milan), Varenna in Lake Como (one hour train ride from Milan) or one of the many lakeside villages in Lake Garda.

Have you been to Florence in the past? If not, you may consider going there.

Will you traveling via public transportation or will you have a car?

Priscilla, I will have a car. I am sorry for not including as information as I should, but until the questions are asked, I am not sure what to say. Since I will be staying in several apartments in several areas, I will have plenty of time to day trip and just shoot from the hip. I will be using local transportation in the Sorrento coast area and Rome for the first 17 days, then I lease a car for the remainder of the trip.

In 17 days you will no doubt see most of Veneto from Vicenza. I would suggest you split your time between Mantova and Bergamo in Lombardy.

As a beautiful contrast to the other places you are staying, consider the Dolomites for some fresh, clean, cool mountain air and vistas. I highly recommend the Val Gardena. We spent two weeks hiking there last year and will spend a month this year starting the end of June.
