Please pause for a second and read your post again. Do you really mean Santorini, a Greek island in the Cyclades Archipelago in the Aegean sea? After you confirm that is really what you meant to write, then we can talk. As a start there will be no trains from Santorini that you'll be able to take (or avoid).

Someone else on this board recently said Santorini when she actually meant Sardinia. Do you mean Sardinia? If not, there are about 100 other possibilities for Italian locations that sound like Santorini which, as noted, is actually Greek.

Taking your question at face value. I would do an open jaw ticket into Florence and home from Athens. Take the train to Rome. From Rome fly to Santorini. I believe that Aegean Air has a summer schedule for direct flights to Santorini. (They did two years ago) You will have to connect through Athens for the flight home. You might do it from Santorini or spend a night in Athens and then fly home. Unless you have a special reason, five days in Florence for most people is excessive. Reduce to three, add one in Rome and gives an extra day for Athens. All airlines are pretty much the same, so use the one that gets you to where you want to go and at a reasonable price. You should have some choices out of SF. Aegean Air is very similar in pricing to Southwest so book early and it is good airline.
