Help with itinerary for day trip to Milan from Varenna

We will be needing to keep with our 4:15 train from Milan to Florence.

I am wondering what our itinerary plan should be and would like some help in looking at best options.

We will be arriving by plane in Milan on Thursday and going directly to Varenna. I think once we arrive by plane we transfer to the central station and then purchase our tickets for Varenna. please advise if I am correct about transferring to the central station..
When we are at the central station I can locate the baggage check area before going on to Varenna.

Question 1 ...Timing wise can we safely arrive in Milan from Varenna at 9:45 on Sunday Sept.1, check our 2 pieces of luggage at the train station and make it to Duomo Square for our 10:45 walking tour by 10:35-10:40.

Question 2 : if we are able to make our tour.by taking the 8:37 train which arrives in Milan at 9:45 . Would we have enough time to take a self guided tour of the Duomo roof top terrace at 2:00 after our tour ends. The tour is scheduled to end at 1:45. . We would then need to get back to the train station and get our luggage. Sand catch the 4:15 train.

Question 3. How long should we allow to tour the Duomo rooftop.

Question 4. If there is not enough time to get back to the train station by 4:15 , we will need to take the earlier train from Varenna and arrive in Milan at 8:38 and do the roof top tour before our 10:45 walking tour.
If we are to do that , what might you suggest we do with our time from 1:45- 4:15 when we catch the train to Florence. Or more like 1:45-3:00 since we will still need to return to the station to collect our luggage before catching the train at 4:15

Will you be arriving at Malpensa, or Linate Airport?

Here's a map of Milano Centrale (Milan's Central Station). You'll find the Left Luggage on the ground level (follow blue signs for "Deposito Bagagli")- there are escalators or elevators going down to this level.

You can purchase your train tickets at Malpensa Airport; the Malpensa Express tickets (to Milano Centrale), and the Regional train tickets to Varenna.

  1. You should have enough time to get to the Duomo, but if you want to be safe then take the earlier train and enjoy a good breakfast at Milano Centrale.

  2. If your tour ends at Piazza del Duomo, you should have enough time to get to the roof terrace as long as you have your tickets already.

  3. I don't recall if there's a time limit on the roof terrace, so you can stay as long or as little as you'd like.

  4. You could have a nice lunch somewhere near Milano Centrale or at Milano Centrale.

Make sure you pick up your luggage with plenty of time before your train departure as there may be a queue of other passengers trying to pick up their luggage too.

Enjoy your trip!

Don't forget to validate your Malpensa Express and Regional train tickets prior to boarding the train, otherwise you may face expensive fines. You may want to refer to this invaluable website for all information about train travel in Italy: Seat61.com/Italy Trains
