Help with itinerary around Milan with a toddler.

Hi,
Thanks for any help. My husband, 2 year old, and I will be in Italy in September. My husband will be there for work so we are flying in and out of Milan. We arrive on a Monday and have until Friday before needing to be back in Milan. We will then spend 6 nights in Milan. I had planned on taking the train for a day trip to Lake Como with my toddler while my husband works one of the days we are in Milan.

I am looking for help with our itinerary for the 1st 4 nights/days. I had thought maybe going to Genova for 2 nights and then somewhere in Cinque Terre for 2 nights. I had also thought about going to Florence and then Cinque Terre. (Is Cinque Terre overrated?) My concerns are with a toddler I don't want to over schedule. Especially that Monday... we land at 10:30 after a long flight and then to put my child on a train for 2-3 hours seems a little risky but we really don't want to stay in Milan any more nights. Anyone have any tips or possible suggestions? We have also considered Turin, Parma, and going north. We will not have a car and are reliant on public transportation. It seems like a few hour train ride is inevitable so I guess I just want to make sure we end up in some place beautiful, relaxing, and fun. Please offer your ideas. Thanks.

Bergamo is less than an hour from Milano by train. Might be a good place for two nights, then you can go elsewhere for a couple of nights. There are frequent trains from Milano Centrale.

Lago di Como or Lago Maggiore are also close to Milano, some lake towns a bit more than an hour away.

Verona is an hour and a half away by train for a nice day trip.
Make sure you take your toddler to the park behind Sforza Castle. Lots to do, play and watch.
