Help with itinerary

We plan on spending about 2 weeks in Bologna and surrounding cities. We would like to end the trip with a beach vacation. Any suggestions? We were thinking of Sardinia or Corsica but it appears difficult to arrange the flights.

Hello lovesellinghomes,

Rimini and adjacent beaches are the classic Italian beach resort scene and is only 1 hour by train from to Bologna. There is an almost endless list of beach resorts to choose from.
But it's understandable if the long cabana covered beaches that the Italians love is not your idea of a relaxing beach. I'm from California so the Italian rented beach world seems very foreign to me.

Just a thought - sounds like an awesome trip,

Thanks so much. I have looked at that beach but we are also from California and the water sounds like it is not great there though the sand looks good. Happy travels to you!

If you stick with the mainland and don't fly to Sardinia, a little bit south of Rimini there are very natural scenic pebble beaches at Sirolo/Numana. You might even be able to fly out of Ancona.

Maybe this would be even more difficult to arrange than flights, maybe not, although it would certainly require more time for the journey, but what about taking a train from Bologna to a port, then a ferry to Sardinia? Actually, there’s probably going to be one or more connections at train stations along the way, but if you had an overnight ferry, you could skip a hotel that night, and sleep onboard. Depending where you wanted to land on Sardinia, there are several potential departure points from the Italian mainland: Livorno, Piombino, and Genoa, for starters.

We did Riminini back when we lived in Germany. Sorry, the beach is poor and I would not recommend it.

If fact, why spend good money to fly to Italy, a wonderful country with lots of history and art to go to beaches that are not as nice as those in Florida and California?

We went to Rimini for the day in September, not for the beach but to see the town and the big street market that day.
We did walk out past the beach area, which was already closed up for the season, and it looked sad, grubby and very unappealing.
I can't imagine it would be any better in summer!

Instead of finishing up your trip at a beach, why not book a few days at an agriturismo with a lovely pool in the countryside?
You can get beaches any old time at home.

Personally I wouldn’t spend time going the distance in Italy to be at a beach when there is so much to see & do in Italy and your time is short. But, to answer your question, what about an Easy Jet type plane ride to Croatia’s west coast of islands?

Perhaps tell us more about what you are looking for--how much time you have, flight home options, etc.
I am a seaside fanatic, not that I necessarily sit on a beach (not that there is anything wrong with that!). I want the salt air/scenery, and I especially want the seafood--which Italians excel at. No doubt Sardinia is tops for scenic beaches, but Monte Conero has gorgeous coastline and hiking trails reminiscent of the Croatian coast. If you just want seaside with a side of beach, Senigallia is a gorgeous old town steps from a sand beach (though I preferred the pebble beach at Fano). Fantastic seafood in these towns.
There are lots of other options though, if I knew what was practical location-wise and desirable for you (sand, pebble, natural beach or w/ services, etc.). For example, does it need to be public transport accessible? Bologna is not far from Florence/Pisa for flights home, and there are some lovely coastal spots on that coast as well.

Thanks for all your replies. Based on the responses, Rimini doesn't sound like a nice beach. We would be open to Corsica or Sardinia. The biggest problem I am having is the flights. We will probably spend two weeks in The Bologna-Parma area and a week in a beach locale. We have been to Southern Sardinia but not to the North.
