Help with Italy scheduling for September

Hi-my husband and I and our 5 year old are planning on spending 22 days in Italy. We would like to go Lake Como, the Amalfi Coast-most likely Forte dei Marmi- Tuscany and Florence. We would like to rent a house or stay at farm house in the Tuscany area for about 7 nights. I have a couple of specific questions that I could use help with:
1. How should we arrange our flights? Fly into Milan and out of Florence?
2. Is there somewhere that would be recommended to stop between Lake Como and Florence? And is train the best transportation?
Thank you!

It would depend on the route you take. If you fly into Naples you can visit the AC first, then a week in Tuscany and finish at Lake Como flying out of Milan. This would also eliminate back tracking. You could also do this in reverse.

Yes, the train is the best way to get around though if you're visiting some of the smaller towns of Tuscany you might want a car for that portion of the trip.

Donna has given you a good route that I will reinforce.

Fly into Naples and see the Amalfi Coast. Sorrento is a good base if you plan to see Pompeii as well, otherwise consider somewhere actually on the AC. Rick Steves' guide can help you select a place.

Take the train north to Florence. If you stay in Florence, no car. If you rent that Tuscan farmhouse or stay at an agriturismo you will need a car. Forte dei Marmi may be a day trip for you from this location? Not sure why you'd stay there.

Train to Milan then on to Lago di Como from Florence. Consider where to stay., Many here, and Mr. Steves, recommend Varenna. It is a lovely little village and easy to get to by train. Fly out of Milan.

With 22 days (21 nights?) you certainly can add another location. Perhaps 5 nights Amalfi Coast, your planned 7 in Tuscany at the farmhouse, Perhaps 3 nights in Florence itself, and consider the cute town of Lucca for 3 nights. Wrap up with 4 nights at Lago di Como and fly out of Milan.

I agree with flying into one city and out of another. I would use Milan and Naples. Florence is a smaller airport and you may not have as many flight options.

Just curious, why are you not going to Venice?
