Help With Italy Itinerary

Hello,

My wife and I visited Italy for 2 weeks back in 1998 and we loved it. We used Rick's advice and had the trip of a lifetime. We are returning in March 2018 with our two daughters ages 12 and 15. We are flying in and out of Rome, and will be in the country for 10 days. I can tell you from experience that we aren't into the whole museum thing, but we will hit the highlights. We have always loved the smaller towns in Europe vs. large cities with the exception of Paris. When we visited in 98, we loved the Cinque Terre, Varenna, Amalfi Coast, etc...but hated Venice which was so disappointing since we had such high expectations. It just felt super expensive and touristy. Anyway, I really want to show my kids a few different areas of this beautiful country since we don't have time to see it all. Here's my preliminary itinerary:

Fri 3-16 Arrive in Rome at 1pm, head to AirBnB in the Jewish Ghetto, quick nap, Dolce Vita Stroll
Sat 3-17 Vatican and Sistine Chapel, wander, Spanish Steps in evening
Sun 3-18 Colisseum, Forum, Trevi Fountain, explore
Mon 3-19 AM train to Naples, Circumvesuviana to Sorrento, slow down
Tue 3-20 SITA bus down Amalfi Coast, visit Positano, etc...enjoy spectacular scenery
Wed 3-21 Morning ferry or train to Naples, Bullet train to Florence, arrive early afternoon, head to AirBnB near Duomo, Visit Accademia and see David
Thu 3-22 Visit Duomo, explore, shop. Not interested in Ufizzi or any other museums
Fri 3-23 Morning and early afternoon relaxing and exploring Florence, Late bus to Siena
Sat 3-24 Spend day and night in Siena
Sun 3-25 AM train or bus to Rome, Arrive at Airport by 2pm for 5:40 flight home

As mentioned above, I really don't care to visit Venice as it was so disappointing years ago. That's why we are visiting Siena instead. We weren't able to visit Siena in 98, and it sounds enchanting and magical, like an Italian version of Rothenburg, Germany (which we visited and loved in 2001). Thanks in advance for any and all comments.

This looks pretty good to me. A couple of thoughts.

Capri is an easy visit from Sorento if you have time.

The Bargello might be worth a quick tour to see sculptures in Florence. I thought it was a great little museum seen in a little amount of time. If you like wine you can see Bacchus, and you can see Mercury. The Bargello is an old prison built in the 1200's

OP, we just got back from our first trip to Italy and will say that as we loved Rothenburg when we visited a few years ago, we also loved Siena (of course, they are different but since you mentioned how much you loved Rothenburg, figured I'd chime in). We were only able to do a day trip in Siena, think it would be even better staying overnight as RodT was. But we still loved it. Spent time for lunch and drinks on Il Campo, climbed the tower and got stunning views. Also, I know you said you're not into museums, but we got the Opa Si Plus pass RS's book talks about, as I wanted to do the 'Gates of Heaven' tour (more escorted through the areas rather than a tour). That was great to see behind the scenes and away from the crowds above the floor. Didn't get to the museum as we didn't want to rush, but did also visit the Baptistery and Crypt since it was included in the pass. Those were compact and enjoyable and not very crowded either. And of course just walking around. Enjoy!

I would swap the Accademia and the Duomo (especially if you are not doing the Bell tower climb, the Dome climb or the Opera del Duomo Museum).
That way you do not have to worry about missing a booked entry time to see David. If you pre-book entry times for a Dome/Tower climb and the Accademia they are easily done in one day.
For excellent Florence scenery, hike up all the way to San Miniato al Monte -- you could do that on the evening of 3/21 instead.
Have a wonderful trip!

Personally I would not want to try to arrive in Rome the same day I was to fly out. What if there is a delay or strike? I would take bus to Sienna on the afternoon of the 22nd and spend 23 in Sienna get to Rome on 24. Maybe better to go back to Florence and take a fast train. That is what we did.
