Help with Italy details!

I need help! I will be flying into Rome FCO on arriving at 9:30 a.m. on Oct. 2. returning to the U.S. on Oct 13. I plan to stay with friends in Arezzo and make a couple of day trips to Florence (by train) and just tool around the countryside by car in the small places for a few days, always returning to Arezzo at night.

  1. how much time should I estimated for clearing customs.
  2. what would be the best train route to Arezzo? Do I book to Florence and get off in Arezzo? How will I know the train stops there? I have read to go to Termini and I have also read that it is best to go to Tiburtina. i have looked at schedules and prices but must be doing something wrong as there seems to be nothing until late afternoon. I do not feel I can make a reservation as I worry about flight delay. I also note that the prices are much greater than what people have posted.
  3. At some point late the next week, I will be going to Venice, back to Arezzo and then on Oct 12, will be going into Rome to fly back to the U.S. on Oct 13.

I also read a post about Ital rail lines?

Any help is appreciated

Check out rome2rio.com. It shows I could book a train tomorrow FCO to Arrezo, change at Roma Termini for about 40 (I don't remember if that was € or $).

Good thinking about not making reservations for the train. I have made the mistake of booking a cheap train ticket only to have my flight delayed and have to buy a new ticket at full price.

If you check Trenitalia for departure times, the clock defaults to the time you are searching, so set the clock icon to 7 or 8am to see more trains. If you checked at 2pm, only departures after 1400 will show.

If you list departure as Roma Termini and destination as Arezzo, the search should show the connections you will need. If part of the trip is on a regionale train, you won't see departure times more than seven days out, so use a date within seven days.

Why look at rome2rio when you can look at the actual train schedules at www.trenitalia.com? They run the trains! There is at least one connection every hour from the airport to Arezzo. Just buy a ticket when you get to the airport train station and they will get you on the next available connection. It might be through Tiburtina or it might be through Termini. Ones through Termini will be more expensive because you will take the Leonardo Express train to Termini (which is more than the train to Tiburtina), and it is mostly Intercity trains to Arezzo. So that would run 40.50 euro. If you go by Tiburtina, it is all Regionale trains and will be 26.55 euro. All routes take from 3 to 3 3/4 hours.
Same deal with a day trip to Venice. It takes about 3 1/2 hours each way. If you booked today, it would run about 96 euro round trip.
You could also book the return to Fiumicino airport now to save a bit of money on the return if it involves an Intercity train.

What Sam said...Go to Trenitalia site enter Fiumicino aeroporto as departure station and Arezzo as arrival station and you get direct connection to Arezzo thru either Termini or Tiburtina. Either 33€  or 27€.

Ann - Others have answered your questions. I will address only your past line abouit "Ital" rail lines. I think you have heard about Italo, the private high-speed line. It is very nice and a good competitor to Trenitalia on some routes. It does not go to Arezzo, but you could try it between Roma and Firenze or Firenze and Venezia.

You may want to consider going to Venice and then overnight train to Rome before your flight out.

Thanks for the help! I read about a Saver Pass....is that just for rail pass purchasers? I am assuming all of mine are point to point. When I board the train at FCO, I validate my ticket. Do I need to do it again at Tiburtina when boarding for Arezzo? Also do I get an assigned seat or choose one when purchasing my ticket or just take an empty seat when I board?

Trains from FCO are regionale, you need to validate. One of your connections to Arezzo is probably regionale as well, you validate that ticket, also. They will be separate tickets. If you buy the tickets in advance and print them at home (don't worry about the paper size, 8.5x11 is fine), you don't need to validate them, the date of travel will be printed on them. Fast trains come with seat assignments, regionale trains are open seating (be sure you are in the correct class - first or second - or you will be asked to move).

The term Saver Pass refers only to a group discount on a multi-day rail pass, but is not relevant for single travelers or for buying individual train tickets.
