Help with Foligno area

I need some help with where to stay in the Foligno area. A little background. We are heading to Italy in September. It is very difficult planning the itinerary for this trip because we have 2 people who have been to Italy before, and 1 that has never been, so we need a mix of common and more unique places. I am thinking the main places will be Florence, Rome and Amalfi coast. The main issue is that my family originates from Foligno and we want to visit our homestead. We will not be staying with Family, as they tend to take up a lot of time, if you know what I mean. I would also like to do some genealogy research while I am there. We are only allotting 1 or 2 days in this region since we really want to spend most of our time elsewhere. To get the most out of our time in the Umbria and Foligno area, what town would you recommended for the best experience? From what I have read it doesn't seem like Foligno is a destination for a lot of tourists. We would like to stay in a picturesque town that embodies the flavor or the area. I would also be open to a place in the country close to a town with restaurants. Any recommendations for a base for this leg of our trip?

I am also thinking that we will need to rent a car. We will be coming from Florence or Sienna and I am wondering if we should rent a car or take the train to the Foligno train station and rent a car there, if that's a possibility? From here we will travel on to Rome.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Much

These three towns are very close by.
Trevi, Montefalco and Bevagna. Can be reached by both bus and train.

Europecar is by the station in Foligno, but may not have automatics available if you need one.
Train from Florence would be easier. Car is only a few minutes faster if this is your first time driving & unfamiliar with the roads.

Trevi is one of the 'Borghi piu belli d'Italia' (most beautiful villages of Italy) an Italian association of towns that meet certain criteria, as is the town of Spello just to the north. I would not use that membership as the only factor for deciding, but it's a big plus. There are some accommodations listed on Trevi's info page: https://borghipiubelliditalia.it/borgo/trevi/

I highly recommend Spello for your stay. We spent two weeks there and were busy every day with wonderful drives and visits to other villages.
