Help with driving from Chianti to Florence

Hi all-
We are in the midst of our wonderful trip in Italy and need a little advice about driving into Florence from our villa in Chianti. I have Rick’s book but I see no mention of the best way to approach the city or where to park (in fairness, it is entirely possible I accidentally tore out the relevant info when attempting to pare down the size of my book)

His tips for volterra and San gimingnano we’re spot on and I’m hoping someone could enlighten me before we attempt this tomorrow morning...I realize this is very short notice and a total long shot but any advice would be fantastic!

We drove towards Florence and parked at the first lot we saw on the outskirts, took a bus to city center. There is a garage at the train station too.

I’m not sure if you are staying in Florence or this is just a day trip. For a day trip, I’d recommend you drive to a train station and take a train into Florence. We were warned not to drive into Florence on our first trip and regretted not taking that advice. And that was before you had to worry about a big fine for straying into the ZTL.

You don’t say where you are, but we took the bus from Greve. There’s a big free public parking lot near the bus stop. Multiple buses run from early in the morning until around 8:00 at night. You go to to big bus station that’s a 15 minute walk to the Duomo.

Thank you all!
we are in San Polo in Chianti. We have 1pm tickets to see the David so we want to make sure we allow enough time to get there. It is just a day trip for us.

Christine, you’re a little closer in than we were. I see 36 minutes by car. Perhaps Roberto or someone can suggest parking on the outskirts.

From what I observed, I would not be as concerned with ZTLs as I would be with the congestion and trying to navigate in unfamiliar surroundings. I was comfortable driving in Tuscan towns and even in Siena, but I chose to not drive in Florence and I’m glad I did. If it were me, I’d get an early start and wander around until your appointment. The Academie is easy to find, it is next to Piazza San Marco and a stones throw from the Duomo.
